1.abuse v. 濫用，虐待;謾罵

drug abuse 濫用藥品

abuse of power 濫用權(quán)力

Abusing of power is illegal.濫用權(quán)力是違法的。

I told her what I thought and got a mouthful of abuse for my pains!我跟她講了我的想法，而得到的回報竟是破口大罵!

Abuse can affect children in many ways.虐待會在許多方面對兒童造成影響。

2. expend vt. 消費(fèi)

expend sth. 付出……，后面常跟名詞effort，energy，time ，strength等。

expend sth. on sth.; expend sth.in doing sth.用在，花在……

Don't expend all your energy on such a useless job.不要把你的精力全花在這無益的工作上。

She expended all her efforts on the care of home and children.她把所有精力都花在料理家務(wù)和照顧孩子上。

You don't need to expend that much time in watching TV.你沒必要花那么多時間在看電視上。

3.delay vt./n. 推遲，延誤，耽擱

delay意思跟put off相近，其后通常接名詞或動名詞作為賓語。

We would like to apologize for the delay.我們愿對延遲表示歉意。

His travelling schedule was delayed by the thesis.因?yàn)檎撐牡脑颍七t了旅行計(jì)劃。

The board decided to delay their vacation until next week.董事會決定把休假推遲到下周。

4.oral a. 口頭的，口述的，口的

oral test /exam 口語考試

My teacher stresses the importance of oral English.我的老師很重視英語口語。

I really want to practise my oral English.我真的很想練習(xí)口語。

An oral agreement is not enough, we must have a written promise.只有口頭協(xié)議是不夠的，我們必須有一個書面承諾。

5.tendency n. 趨向，趨勢

determining tendency 決定性趨勢

The tendency of today's young people to marry and bear children at late ages is very obvious in China.在中國，年輕人晚婚晚育的趨勢越來越明顯。

Such a tendency is not to be encouraged.此風(fēng)不可長。
